We are fortunate to work with outstanding partners in Whatcom County to achieve our vision. Whether you are a non-profit, a private business, a philanthropist, a civic leader, or a community based organization, we can’t do this work without you.
Our intention is for the impact of our work to go far beyond the grants. We are fortunate to have a number of initiatives and programs that we manage in service to the mission of the organization and in support of creating a vibrant community where every child gets a healthy start and every person receives the care they need throughout their lifetime.
We provide direct financial support in the form of grants to non-profit organizations who are doing work to create, invest, and advance individual and community health in Whatcom County.
Two grant rounds are held each year; one in April, one in October.

The Foundation is proud to have been a sponsor for a number of campaigns in the community, including providing fiscal sponsorship for the Whatcom Hospice House, Meals on Wheels, and Our Treehouse (in the past) and Health Ministries Network. Chuckanut is proud to partner with non-profits and other foundations to leverage resources and make bigger impact together.
The Lois Jean Roberts Nursing Scholarship Program was established in memory of Lois Jean Roberts, wife of James Roberts, St. Luke’s Foundation Executive Director from 1983 – 1996 with the intention to promote and expand opportunities for students to attend and complete their nursing education.
Applications are accepted April through May every year.
Laurendeau Cancer Care Fund
Founded in 1980, the Laurendeau Cancer Care Fund is named after Dr. Theresa Laurendeau, a retired Bellingham Pathologist. She provided the foundation’s initial funding which has assisted over 500 Whatcom County cancer patients in paying for medical expenses who aren’t eligible for public assistance or have limited resources.
Our goal is to create a healthy community - one in which everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We do this work with optimism and positivity, believing we can make a difference; in relationship and through collaboration; and with a commitment to responsibility in sustaining partnerships and following-through.

Chuckanut Health Foundation has invested more than $16 million in direct grants to organizations focused on improving health in our community since 1983.
Years Serving Whatcom County
Created with the sale of the St. Luke’s Hospital in 1983, the Chuckanut Health Foundation (formerly the St. Luke’s Foundation) has been working to improve and advance community health for over 35 years.
Over the years, we have worked with hundreds of non-profit partners in the community and through those investments, have impacted thousands of individual’s lives.
There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.
