We have traveled all over the world but are always happy to return home to the amazing beauty and recreational opportunities that abound here in Whatcom County.
Dave Lynch, MD - Past-President
I live in Whatcom County because of the spirit of community we share in this wonderful place we call home.
Astrid Newell, MD - Vice-President
Connections to extended family (my husband grew up here), community, the outdoors (parks and trails, lakes, bay, islands, mountains), and to meaningful work (opportunities to positively impact the health and well-being of Whatcom County children, families, and community).
Greg Winter - Secretary
I’m pleased to live in a place where people vote their values to invest in a healthy community.
Bryant Engebretson - Treasurer, Chair of the Finance Committee
Whatcom County offers the best of everything, high quality of life, great community services and a strong commercial sector, plus if you need some big city services or excitement we are strategically located between Seattle and Vancouver, BC. I love it here!
Sue Cole, Chair of the Community Engagement Committee
My husband and I were working in Seattle, and we decided that Whatcom County offered a lively community in which to raise our family, plus the opportunity to make a real difference in peoples' lives through meaningful work and involvement with others who shared the commitment for a better world.
As a transplant from Chicago, via Los Angeles, the only thing that would make me leave Bellingham is if my daughter moved somewhere out of state and had a baby. It is beautiful, has lots of great places to eat, many wonderful things to do, and people with whom I have a lot in common. There is a strong sense of community. The colors in Whatcom County are deep and vibrant.
Brandi Damon, Chair of the Grants Committee
I live in Whatcom County because my children need a clean, healthy, and natural place to grow up. One where they are given diversity and the simple joy of the beauty in the area that we live. My family lives here because we are close to the mountains and the bay, and it is the perfect size city, big enough to have a University but small enough where you see your neighbors at the grocery.
After living in Bellingham years ago as a graduate student, the opportunity to come back and work in a city that supports education as it does was a gift. My family and I love the balanced quality of life that is possible here. We love the water and all the fun it provides in the summer.
Chao-Ying Wu, MD
The community, schools, the natural environment, and a long history of a strong committed medical and educational community.
Susan Holstine, DO
Mountains, Ocean, Community, Wellness, The Forest, Lakes the People, Religion as well as a strong medical facility and a balanced life are things that come to mind when I think of why we are in Bellingham. My husband and I, thought our years as a young family had many influences in our training. What we learned was the importance of life balance in a strong community environment that is the focus of our foundation. We feel all these things are omnipresent in our community and are critical, for a healthy family and to serve the needs of others.
Mike Hammes, Emeritus Board Member
I found Whatcom County to be the best place for raising children and creating the ultimate life/work balance. A small community feel and large community opportunities collide here to create great living.
